The current pre-defined upsells setup is too limiting for sites that operate across multiple regions or departments. One set of qualifying conditions maps to one set of upsell products, globally, with no way to vary that without developer involvement.
We're moving to a rules-based model that gives merchants full control directly in the module. Key changes:
  • Each rule is self-contained: it defines when it applies and what to show
  • Multiple rules can be configured per upsell, each operating independently
  • More specific rules automatically take priority over general ones
  • Smart vs Aggressive strategy (whether to show only threshold-reaching products, or any products) becomes a visible, merchant-configurable setting rather than hidden dev code
  • Promote/Demote controls apply per rule
  • Available conditions adapt to each site's supported dimensions (locale, department, category, etc.)
This applies to Cart Total, Free Shipping, and You Might Also Like upsells, and will be phased by upsell type starting with Cart Total.
The outcome is that merchants on multi-locale or multi-department sites can configure and adjust their upsell logic themselves.
